Garden Edge | Lawn Edging | Garden Bed Edging
Every edging material we stock, and how to pick between them
Whether you are defining flower beds, edging a path, or stopping grass creeping where it should not, this is the category that covers it. Plastic through to corten, in the heights that suit each job, with the tools to fit them.
The materials, honestly compared
Flexible plastic: practical and cheap
The everyday answer. Recycled plastic strip that bends into curves by hand and pegs down with a mallet, no trench needed beyond a spade line. It is the lowest cost per metre and the easiest to fit on your own. Supplied per metre in 5 cm and 10 cm face heights. It will not rust, and in strong sun it will eventually fade.
Corrugated metal: a ribbed profile
Corrugated steel with hemmed edges, so it is safe to handle and stiffer than a flat strip along its length. It gives a more agricultural, textured look than the plain steel ranges.
Recycled rubber: the mulch border
A 3 m roll, 11 cm wide, made from recycled tyres. It rolls straight out along a bed rather than being pegged in like a strip, which makes it the quickest thing here to install.
Black steel: a clean modern line
Thin, dark, almost invisible against grass and soil. Steel wants a proper spade line cut before it goes in, and it is heavier to handle, but nothing else gives quite so crisp an edge.
Stainless steel: the sharpest finish
The same clean line as black steel, in a bright finish that resists corrosion. Available in 5 cm, 10 cm and 20 cm face heights, so it also does retaining work where a level changes.
Corten steel: rust as the finish
Weathering steel, which forms a stable orange brown patina on the surface and then stops. It suits planting and architectural schemes, and it is what most design led jobs specify. Available in 10 cm and 15 cm face heights.
We do not sell stone, brick, concrete or timber edging. Those are all legitimate choices, and if that is what your scheme wants, a landscape supply yard will serve you better than we will.
Choosing
- Budget and length of run. On a long run the price per metre decides it, and that usually means plastic.
- What it holds back. Grass only: 5 cm is fine. Mulch, gravel or a level change: go deeper.
- Curves. Plastic bends by hand. Steel bends, but wants forming around something round.
- How it should look. Steel to disappear, corten to be seen, plastic to be functional.
Fitting it
All of it is meant to be fitted by the person who buys it. Cut a clean vertical line with a square spade, set the edging against that face with the top about 50 mm above soil, peg it down every 1.2 m or so on straights and every 300 mm on curves, then backfill and firm it in. A rubber mallet is the right tool for the spikes.
Larger or more intricate schemes are where people call in a landscaper. We do not offer installation.
Looking after it
Keep the top edge clear of soil and clippings so the line stays visible. Walk the run each spring and tap back anything the frost has lifted. Replace damaged sections rather than leaving a gap.
How long it lasts
It depends on the material, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling. Steel and corten last for many years in ordinary ground. Plastic lasts well but ages in sun and can be knocked about by a mower, which is why we suggest the thicker option and why we sell spare pegs.
