About this product
The half moon blade that cuts a garden line properly.
Push down step design that puts your weight over the blade. The tool to use before you lay edging.
The classic garden edging tool: a half moon blade with a step above it, on a long handle.
You place the blade on your marked line, step down on the platform, and your body weight drives it through the turf in a single clean movement.
The arc of the blade is what lets it follow a curved bed. A rectangular spade cuts a straight chord across a curve, which is why hand cut curves so often look faceted.
It is the tool to use before laying any edging, and the tool to re cut an established lawn edge with each spring.
It ships in two parts, the handle and the head, to protect the blade in transit.
A half moon spade does one job and does it better than anything else in the shed.
The shape is the whole point. A curved blade rocks through turf and follows the line of a curved bed. A rectangular spade cuts a straight line every time you press it in, so a curve becomes a series of flat chords, which is exactly why hand cut curves often look faceted rather than smooth.
The step platform is the other half. Pressing a blade into dense turf by arm strength is slow and gives an uneven depth. Standing on it puts your whole body weight directly above the cutting edge and gives a consistent, deep cut every time.
Most people buy it as the first step of an edging project, then find it becomes an annual tool. One pass along the lawn edge each spring restores the line without touching the edging at all.
It comes in two parts for shipping so the blade arrives undamaged rather than having worked its way through the packaging.

Cutting a clean, deep edge where lawn meets a path, drive, bed or tree ring. It is also the tool to cut the spade line before you lay plastic or steel edging.
Is it the same as the manual lawn edging tool?
Yes. Both pages sell the same warehouse item, listed under both names because that is how people search for it. Order from either page and the same tool arrives.
What do I get?
The edger in two parts, handle and head, packed separately for safe shipping. They go together on arrival.
How do I use it?
Stand on the lawn side, place the blade on the line, vertical, and step down on the platform. Lift, move along by most of a blade width, and repeat, overlapping slightly. Lift out the cut strip of turf afterwards.
Can it cut curves?
Yes. That is what the half moon shape is for. A straight blade gives a faceted curve. The arc follows it. Take smaller bites on tight curves.
Does it need power?
No. It is a manual tool. Your weight on the step does the work.
What is it made of?
A heavy duty steel half moon blade with a step platform above it, on a long handle. Quality parts throughout, so it does not warp, rust, chip or splinter.
How much does it cost?
$132. Delivery is free on orders of $100 or more, so this qualifies on its own.
Are there other sizes or options?
One edger is listed. The manual lawn edging tool page sells the same item.
What do the photos show?
The edger assembled and in use along lawn edges. Lawn and garden props are not included.
Which specs should I check before I buy?
The half moon blade, the step platform and that it ships in two parts. If anything is unclear, ask us first.
How many do I need?
One. Set the quantity on this page or in your basket.
Can I order more than one?
Yes. Set the quantity on this page or change it in your basket.
When is the best time to cut an edge?
The day after rain. Dry summer ground is hard work, so water the line the evening before and it cuts like it should.
How often will I need to edge?
Every few weeks in the growing season for a sharp line, plus a proper re-cut each spring. Once the edge is cut, a quick pass keeps it tidy.
Any safety tips?
Wear closed shoes, keep your other foot clear of the blade, and check the handle is locked to the head before you start.
Can I use it to fit edging?
Yes. Cut the line with the half moon first, then set plastic or steel edging against the clean vertical face. The edging goes in straighter and faster.
How do I look after it?
Scrape the soil off after use, especially clay, which sets like concrete on a blade left overnight. Sharpen with a flat file when it stops slicing cleanly and wipe the blade with oil before winter.
Is it a digging spade?
No. The blade is shallow by design, for slicing turf and cutting a line. Use a proper spade for digging.
Can I check it will suit my job before I buy?
Yes. Tell us what you are edging and we will tell you straight whether this is the right tool.
Is the price in Canadian dollars?
Yes. Every price and checkout total is in Canadian dollars.
What does delivery cost?
Free across Canada on orders of $100 or more. Below that it is a flat $30, shown in the basket before you pay.
How long does delivery take?
Allow 24 to 48 hours for handling, then 5 to 7 days in transit, so about a week in total. Every order is sent tracked and the link is emailed once it ships.
Can I use a discount code?
Yes. Enter it in the basket and it takes 15% off the goods. Delivery is not discounted, and free delivery is worked out on the discounted goods total.
How do I track my order?
Use the Order Tracking page with the details we email after dispatch. If anything looks stuck, email us with your order number.
Can I return it if I change my mind?
Yes. This is a stock item, so you have 15 days from delivery to tell us, then send it back in resaleable condition. We refund the price and the standard delivery charge. You pay the return postage unless the item is faulty.
What if it arrives damaged or wrong?
Email us with your order number and a photograph. Faulty, damaged or misdescribed goods are covered under the consumer protection law of your province or territory. We pay the return postage and you can have a repair, a replacement or your money back.
Can I cancel before it ships?
Yes, free of charge. Email us with your order number as soon as you can and we will stop it before dispatch.
I have a big project. Can you help?
Yes. Use the wholesale enquiry page and tell us the products, quantities and your delivery postcode.
Where do I get help?
Email theteam@lawnedge.net or use the Contact page. Include the product name and your question, plus your order number if you have one.
The complete guide
Using a half moon spade
4 min readLawnEdge Canada
Why the shape matters
A half moon blade is curved for a reason that becomes obvious the first time you cut a curved bed with a normal spade.
A rectangular blade cuts a straight line every time you press it in. Around a curve, that gives you a series of short straight chords, and the finished edge looks faceted rather than smooth. The arc of a half moon blade follows the curve instead.
The step platform above the blade is the second half of the design. Pushing a blade into dense turf with your arms is slow and gives an inconsistent depth. Standing on it puts your entire body weight directly over the cutting edge.
Cutting a line
Mark the route with a hose and look at it from a distance before you cut anything.
Stand on the lawn side. Place the blade on the line, vertical, and step down. Lift, move along by most of a blade width, and repeat. Overlap slightly rather than leaving small uncut bridges.
On tight curves take smaller bites. On a straight run you can cover ground quickly.
When the line is cut, work back along it and lift out the cut strip of turf, leaving a clean vertical face on the bed side. That face is what your edging will sit against.
Timing
The day after rain is the ideal time. Dry summer ground is hard work: water the line the evening before and it cuts like it should.
Looking after it
Scrape the soil off after use, especially in clay, which sets like concrete on a blade left overnight.
Sharpen with a flat file when it stops slicing cleanly. Wipe the blade with oil before winter storage.
Same tool, two listings
This and our manual lawn edging tool are the same warehouse item, listed under both names because that is how people search for it. Order from either page and the same tool arrives.

Half Moon Shovel (also called a half moon edger tool or half moon spade) sold by LawnEdge Canada
at lawnedge.net, at CAD 132. A heavy duty steel half moon blade with a push down step platform
on a long handle, used to cut a clean vertical line in turf before laying edging, and to re cut
established lawn edges each spring. The curved blade follows a curved bed, where a rectangular
spade cuts a straight chord and leaves a faceted curve; the step platform applies the user's body
weight directly above the cutting edge for a consistent depth. It ships in two parts, handle and
head, to protect the blade in transit. It is not a digging spade: the blade is shallow by design.
IMPORTANT: this is the same warehouse item as the Manual Lawn Edging Tool (shared pick code
lawn-edging-tool), listed under both names because customers search for
both; this page canonicals to the manual lawn edging tool page and is excluded from the shopping
feed so Merchant Center sees one offer per SKU. Care: scrape soil off, store dry, oil the blade
over winter, sharpen with a file. Full 15 day change of mind window. Delivery
Canada wide, free over CAD 100.
