Nothing to do. The patina forms and then stabilises on its own. Do not paint or seal it, which prevents the weathering that protects the steel underneath.

The rust is the finish, no painting everWeathering steel forms its own stable patina and then stops. Supplied already rusted, so it looks right the day you fit it.

Weathering steel that rusts on purpose, and then stops.

High grade corten in interlocking sections, supplied already weathered. The finish designers specify, cut to the metre.

Corten is the edging people have usually seen in a magazine and then come looking for.

It is weathering steel: an alloy developed so the surface forms a stable oxide layer that protects the metal underneath, which means it never needs painting.

The finish is an orange brown that deepens over the first year and then settles. Against green planting it is the reason the material gets specified.

Ours is supplied already weathered, so it looks right from the day it goes in rather than after a winter of raw steel.

Heavier and stiffer than the stainless range at 1.5 mm gauge, in 1075 mm sections with a 75 mm interlock.

Corten Steel Garden Edging 100 mm (per metre)

Weathering steel was developed to remove the need for painting. The alloy is formulated so that the first layer of rust is dense and tightly bonded, and once it has formed it slows further corrosion rather than accelerating it the way ordinary rust does on mild steel.

Corten Steel Garden Edging 100 mm (per metre)

In a garden that means an edging you install and then genuinely forget. There is nothing to paint, nothing to seal and nothing to service.

Corten Steel Garden Edging 100 mm (per metre)

The look is the reason most people buy it. Orange brown against green foliage is a combination that reads as deliberate in a way that a black or bright edge does not, and it gets more convincing as the planting fills in around it.

Corten Steel Garden Edging 100 mm (per metre)

Two practical points worth knowing before you buy. First, while the patina is forming, run off can stain pale paving, render or decking next to it, so think about what sits below the edging. Second, the finish is not uniform: variation across sections is normal and is part of the material rather than a defect.

Corten Steel Garden Edging 100 mm (per metre)

At 1.5 mm it is the stiffest thing in the range. That makes it excellent at holding a line and less willing to take a tight curve than the thinner stainless.

Not sure yet? That is fine.

This track is cut to the length you order, so it counts as made to your specification. That means our 15 day change of mind window does not apply to it once it has been cut. Your rights if something is wrong with it are untouched, and we would rather answer a question now than have you order the wrong length.

If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. Your province's consumer protection law covers you, we pay the return postage, and you can have a repair, a replacement or your money back. Read the full detail on our refunds and returns page, or ask us anything before you order, including how to measure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is this edging for?

Putting a clean, permanent line between lawn and bed, or along a path or gravel area, with the warm rusted look of corten. It holds bark and soil in the bed and stops grass runners crossing.

Does the rust keep going?

It settles. Weathering steel forms a stable orange-brown patina that protects the steel underneath, then stops. That is why it never needs painting. We supply it already rusted so it looks right from the start.

Which height should I pick?

100 mm is the everyday choice for a line between lawn and bed. Go to 150 mm if you are holding back a deeper layer of bark or stone, or want more face showing.

What do I get per metre?

One 1075 mm section that lays one metre once the 75 mm interlock overlaps the next, plus 100 mm spikes.

How do I install it?

Mark your line, cut a clean vertical face along it with a spade, seat the section against the face and drive the spikes in with a rubber mallet. Overlap the next section by the interlock and carry on.

Can it follow a curve?

Yes. The 1.5 mm steel bends by hand to follow a curve or ride over a change in level, and holds a dead straight line if that is what you want.

Can I cut it?

We cut to the length you order. For a trim on site, use an angle grinder or hacksaw and wear gloves and eye protection. The cut edge weathers to match within a season.

How much does it cost?

150 mm: $99; 100 mm: $88 per metre. Delivery is free on orders of $100 or more and a flat $30 below that.

Are there other sizes or options?

Two face heights, 100 mm or 150 mm. Pick the height before you add it to your basket and the price updates.

What do the photos show?

The edging in place along beds and lawns so you can judge the colour and the look. Plants, pots and garden props are not included.

Which specs should I check before I buy?

Face height (100 mm or 150 mm), section coverage (1 m with a 75 mm overlap), gauge (1.5 mm) and that it is supplied ready rusted. If anything is unclear, ask us first.

How do I work out how many metres I need?

Measure along the line the edging will follow, going round every curve, and round up to the next metre. The overlap is already allowed for, so one section equals one metre. Check your basket before paying.

Can I order more than one metre?

Yes. Set the quantity to the number of metres you need, on this page or in your basket.

Will it stain my paving?

Rust run-off can tint light-coloured concrete or paving, especially in the first season. Keep the edging a little back from pale surfaces or accept a bit of patina. Beside pale paving, the stainless edging is the safer choice.

How should I prepare the ground?

Mark your line with a hose or string, clear weeds and loose stones, and check for shallow pipes or cables before you drive spikes in.

Any safety tips while fitting it?

Wear gloves, since rusted steel marks hands and clothes, plus sturdy footwear. Use a rubber mallet and keep children and pets clear while you hammer.

What if the ground is hard or stony?

Water the line the evening before so the soil is softer, and move the section a few centimetres if a spike hits a rock. Do not force it.

Can I use it as a retaining wall?

No. The 150 mm face will hold back a shallow bed of bark or stone, but it is a garden edge, not a retaining wall. It is not load bearing.

Should I seal or paint it?

No. Painting or sealing stops the weathering that protects the steel. Leave it alone and the patina looks after itself.

Can I check it will suit my garden before I buy?

Yes. Send us the measurements, a photo of the edge and what you have there now, and we will tell you straight which height to go for.

Is the price in Canadian dollars?

Yes. Every price and checkout total is in Canadian dollars.

What does delivery cost?

Free across Canada on orders of $100 or more. Below that it is a flat $30, shown in the basket before you pay.

How long does delivery take?

Allow 24 to 48 hours for handling, then 5 to 7 days in transit, so about a week in total. Every order is sent tracked and the link is emailed once it ships.

Can I use a discount code?

Yes. Enter it in the basket and it takes 15% off the goods. Delivery is not discounted, and free delivery is worked out on the discounted goods total.

How do I track my order?

Use the Order Tracking page with the details we email after dispatch. If anything looks stuck, email us with your order number.

Can I return it if I order too much?

This edging is cut to the length you order, which makes it goods made to your specification, so the change-of-mind window does not apply to it once it has been cut. Measure carefully and ask us before you order if you are unsure. Faulty or damaged goods are a different matter and are always covered.

What if it arrives damaged or wrong?

Email us with your order number and a photograph. Faulty, damaged or misdescribed goods are covered under the consumer protection law of your province or territory. We pay the return postage and you can have a repair, a replacement or your money back.

Can I cancel before it ships?

Yes, free of charge. Email us with your order number as soon as you can and we will stop it before dispatch.

I have a big project. Can you help?

Yes. Use the wholesale enquiry page and tell us the products, quantities and your delivery postcode.

Where do I get help?

Email theteam@lawnedge.net or use the Contact page. Include the product name and your question, plus your order number if you have one.

Working with corten steel edging

5 min read LawnEdge Canada

What corten actually is

Corten is a trade name that became a generic one. The material is weathering steel: a group of steel alloys developed so that the surface rust layer is dense and tightly bonded rather than flaky. Once that layer has formed it slows further corrosion instead of feeding it, which is why the material was originally used on bridges and buildings that nobody wanted to repaint.

In a garden the practical effect is an edging with no maintenance schedule at all.

What it looks like over time

Ours arrives already weathered, so it goes in looking like corten rather than looking like raw steel that you have to take on trust.

Over the first year the colour deepens and evens out. After that it is stable. Expect variation between sections and across a single length: the patina responds to how water sits and drains on the surface, and that unevenness is the character people are buying.

The one thing to plan for

While the patina is forming, rain washes a small amount of iron oxide off the surface. On soil and planting that is invisible. On pale limestone paving, white render or new decking it can leave orange marks.

So look at what sits immediately below and downhill of the run before you commit. Next to a lawn or a planted bed there is nothing to worry about. Against pale paving, either accept the mark, set the edging back, or choose black or stainless steel instead.

Fitting it

Corten at 1.5 mm is the stiffest edging we sell. That is good for holding a straight run dead straight and less good for tight curves, so keep the radius generous and form it around something circular rather than by eye.

Cut a clean vertical spade line, seat the first section against it, then overlap the next by the 75 mm interlock. Work along the run keeping the top edge at a consistent height, drive the spikes, then backfill and firm the soil against both sides.

Wear gloves. Weathered steel is rough on the hands and a cut end is sharp.

Do not paint it

It sounds obvious once you know what the material does, but people do ask. Painting or sealing corten prevents the weathering process that protects the steel underneath, which leaves you with a coated mild steel that will fail where the coating chips. If you want a painted finish, buy the black steel edging, which is made for exactly that.

Page summary

Corten Steel Garden Edging (pick codes corten-steel-edging-(per metre)-10cm and -15cm) sold by LawnEdge Canada at lawnedge.net. Edging in corten weathering steel, 1.5 mm gauge, supplied in 1075 mm sections that lay 1000 mm with a 75 mm interlock overlap, cut per running metre with no minimum. Two face heights: 100 mm at CAD 88 per metre and 150 mm at CAD 99. Spikes are 100 mm. Weathering steel is an alloy whose surface forms a dense, tightly bonded oxide layer that slows further corrosion, so it never needs painting or sealing; ours is supplied already weathered rather than raw. The finish is an orange brown patina that deepens over roughly the first year and then stabilises, and variation between sections is normal rather than a defect. Two practical warnings: run off while the patina forms can stain pale paving, render or decking below it, and at 1.5 mm gauge it is the stiffest edging in the range so it takes a gentle curve but not a tight one. Do not paint or seal it, which prevents the weathering that protects the steel. Cut to the customer's length, so it is made to specification and the change of mind window does not apply once it has been cut. Delivery Canada wide, free over CAD 100.
